Pacquiao-Bradley rematch doesn’t break one million in pay-per-view buys

In his heyday, Manny Pacquiao averaged 1.1 million pay-per-view buys per fight. (Jed Jacobsohn/SI)

Manny Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley’s welterweight title fight last month generated between 775,000 and 800,000 pay per view buys, multiple sources familiar with the numbers told SI.com.

HBO, which produced and distributed the pay per view, declined comment.

The number is a significant improvement for Pacquiao from his last fight. Last November, Pacquaio’s bout against Brandon Rios generated 475,000 buys. The low number was attributed, in part, to the fight being held in Macau, absent a strong U.S. media presence. Pacquiao-Bradley was a rematch of their controversial 2012 fight. Though there was little demand for a rematch then –most thought Pacquiao won the fight comfortably — Bradley’s strong 2013, which included wins over Ruslan Provodnikov and Juan Manuel Marquez, increased the demand for it.

Still, the pay per view number for Pacquiao-Bradley II represents another dip from the buys Pacquiao produced in his prime years. In the seven fights before the first Bradley fight, Pacquiao averaged 1.1 million buys per fight. The first fight between Pacquiao and Bradley generated 890,000 buys, per HBO. Some have argued that Pacquiao’s diminishing power — he has not knocked out an opponent in his last eight fights — is a factor, as is the rapidly fading possibility of a showdown with Floyd Mayweather.  – Chris Mannix

Of course it didn't sell well, Pacquiao clearly won the first first fight making the main event that much less compelling and the undercard was tepid at best.

It's a good figure, considering that many did not buy the PPV because Pacman already won the first time unofficially.

Next fight by Pacman should do better, against jmm or Canelo (should break Pacman's own PPV record)

s the bigger draw..What do you think if manny is an american? could he be a bigger draw than mayweather?

i cannot understand why shoul this deter the mayweather fight.. what excuse does mayweather have? he says ppv track record? pac brings in (at his so-called washed up stage) close 800k, while canelo who is the main draw against angulo only brings in close to 400,00? both of them are ppv high rollers and pac is nn-american at that.. he is only next to fmj as ppv draw so why doesn't the fight happen? ali knows the answer and most casual fans with not much knowledge of the game and unfortunately still have subtle racial biases know the answer.. fmj is only concerned of leaving the game with a zero and pac provides the threat

If today's fight makes better numbers, that would be the definition of the majority of this generation's boxing fans.

Better then mayweather v Guerrero #s. Mayweather v canelo drew 2 mil cause canelo is a huge draw on his own. Don't anyone get that confused, Also it had Garcia v Matthysse on the undercard. 800-1M is huge!! What's everyone's moaning about, it's a $70 expense to see a fight that wasn't necessary as pacquiao won the first fight, so in essence we had to spend $140 between the 2 fights to see justice done by the judges. That's a tough pill to swallow for many casual fan. Anyone that knows, knows Bradley does not belong in the same ring with Pacquiao, and have to pay to see what we know just plain sucks. it's that simple

Top Rank did not help Pacquiao / Bradley PPV numbers at all by putting together a sh** under card.

I would certainly say these are good numbers considering his dance partner. I expect Mayweather/Maidana to be in this range as well. Similar to Money May's numbers with Guerrero.

Why would people pay for the re-match when they were clearly cheated out of their $$ the first time around?

I will continue to watch all Pacquiao fights as long as they remain entertaining. Each of his fights are much more exciting than Maynever's.

Boycott all Maynever fights until he man up and fights Manny.

You can just watch it online for free.  Why pay $70 for a crappy rematch?

Give us what we want...Pac vs Money...the PPV would be the biggest EVER and give boxing the shot in the arm it needs. The fight would have been better three years ago but it would still be great today and by far the biggest fight we have seen since Ali ruled the roost. No excuses this time Floyd, I am rooting for Pac but think Money would win. Prove me right or wrong

"the pay per view number for Pacquiao-Bradley II represents another dip from the buys Pacquiao produced in his prime years."

This might be important for the promoters and their ad agencies selling sponsorships, but it really has no effect on the fan-base. We all know that Mayweather rules the roost in PPV.  And we know that Pacquiao is still the second biggest draw today. And he's still in the all-time top 5 list.

    Floyd Mayweather  12,643,000  $756,515,000

    Oscar Dela Hoya  14,081,000  $696,796,000

    Manny Pacquiao  12,193,000  $661,061,000

    Evander Holyfield  12,583,000  $548,221,000

    Mike Tyson  12,400,000  $545,000,000

The number of buys has a lot to do with the prices being charged and the boxers that are facing each other.  It does NOT mean Pacquiao is losing his fan base.

Pacquiao may not do well in PPV buys facing Rios, and maybe better against Bradley, but one things a guarantee– they work break all records if it were Mayweather/Pacquiao.

It's down for one simple reason: Pac/Mayweather.  Any other fight in this weight class is pointless.

800000 still SOUNDS like a lot of buys. I'm sure HBO still made $.  I wonder how much $ did Pacquiao & Bradley get from the PPV buys?

because it was a bogus rematch. Manny won the first fight and everybody knew it. Arum fixed the decision for rematch money. They did not get mine.

He fought the P4P #3 coming off a big 2013 in a rematch of a highly controversial decision. If you can't draw with that storyline, well.....

How many PPV records does Manny hold? How close has he come to existing records? Interesting that Manny needs Floyd to break a record, Floyd certainly don't need Manny. It took Manny 17 PPV events to achieve these numbers, it took Floyd 11 events to achieve his. Manny/Bob have ZERO negotiating leverage with Floyd, but Bob will neve accept that. The fight will never happen.

@morejunk  Even that has lost it's luster since Pacquiao isn't the same fighter he was 3-4 years ago when that fight should have happened.

    Indeed.

But Mayweather is fighting scrubs these days so I think it's still a good match up.  They're both on the tail end of their careers.
